Centre For Marine Biofouling and Bio-Innovation

The Centre for Marine Biofouling and Bio-Innovation (CMBB) at the University of New South Wales is an international focal point for interdisciplinary research into chemically mediated interactions between organisms.

  Primary Aims:

  • To understand, in a mechanistic fashion, how the ecology, physiology and molecular biology of organisms are mediated by chemical signals and;
  • To apply this knowledge to the development of new biotechnologies

To date, such technologies include inhibition of the settlement and growth of marine organisms (fouling) on artificial surfaces; interference with microbial regulatory systems, and identification and characterization of novel classes of signalling molecules for the modulation of bacterial biofilm formation. In essence, the Centre aims to understand and use "smart molecules" in novel biotechnologies.
