Contact lenses:
In collaboration with Biosignal Pty Ltd, the CRC for Eye Research Technology and Eye Vision, and an international commercial partner, the CMBB is currently engaged in the lead optimisation of QSBs for attachment to contact lenses. QSBs can be presented on lens surfaces so that biofilm formation by key bacterial eye pathogens can be prevented for extended periods of time.

Biomaterials:
As for contact lenses, QSBs can be coated onto catheters and implants such that interference in bacterial signal communication systems is achieved. The current R&D, at the CMBB, on biomaterials surface coatings employ the modification of safe lead compounds for long term prevention of biofilm formation by common Gram negative and Gram positive bacterial pathogens. The CMBB conducts chemical synthesis and modification, surface coatings and attachments, in vitro and selected in vivo microbiological assays.

Industrial surfaces:
CMBB with Biosignal Pty Ltd collaborates with a European commercial partner for the development of industrial surface cleaners and the coatings of surfaces for prolonged biofilm protection. Trials of commercially viable QSBs for biofilm prevention and removal of industrial surfaces will commence in 2004.

Pharmaceuticals:
The CMBB has demonstrated the efficacy in reducing expression of QS mediated expression of virulence, pathogen load, infection, and inflammatory responses in several animal models. There are ongoing experiments using safe and effective furanone derivatives as new leads for specific applications.

Oral Care:
The CMBB has developed QSBs with proven in vitro and in vivo efficacy against several microbes that form biofilms and cause infections in the oral cavity. In particular, CMBB has selected QSBs and other active compounds that in a non-growth inhibitory fashion prevent gingivitis as demonstrated in animal experiments. The current program is aimed at developing QSBs for delivery in animal care products to enter the registration phase by 2004.
