Occupational Health & Safety

School Safety Committee

The Role of  the School Safety Committee is:

1.) To identify and resolve OHS issues at the local level wherever they arise
  • on campus
  • staff working from home
  • staff and students on school business on field excursions
2.) To assist the Heads of Schools and Divisional Units to meet their legal responsibilities for health and safety of staff, students and visitors
The Committee is also there to:
  • Perform functions specified in Section 18 of the OHS Act 2000.
  • Assist the local manager to identify, assess and control risks to staff, students and visitors.
  • Assist the unit manager to investigate work related accidents and ill health issues and to recommend remedial and prevention action.
  • Assist the unit manager to monitor compliance with relevant OHS
    regulations.
How it works:
Any person should take any OHS concerns immediately to their supervisor or lab manager. If the issue can not be resolved, the employee then has the responsibility to report the problem to a member of the OHS committee. The committee will then work cooperatively with all parties to reach a safe and practical situation. If this can not occur, the OHS Chairperson will request an investigation by a WorkCover inspector.
