Research Contribution

I am interested in bioinformatics and the design and use of computational methods for the analysis of biological systems, from biomolecular sequence analysis to complex system modelling. I worked for several years in industry, designing user interfaces for integration of bioinformatics applications that are widely used in Australia and overseas. Since returning to academia in 2002 I have developed iHMMune-align (in collaboration with Andrew Collins), a hidden Markov model-based software application that improves the analysis of rearranged immunoglobulin genes and facilitates the accurate identification of component germline genes and of clonally-related immunoglobulin gene sequences.

I also have an ongoing interest in gene expression and the computational inference of regulatory relationships from gene expression data, and in the application of bioinformatics methods for detecting deep homology. The latter has led to the identification of seipin, a protein whose mutation causes lipodystrophy in humans, as the ortholog of a yeast protein regulating lipid droplet size (in collaboration with Robert Yang)
