Professional Experience
- 1987-1993 Prof & Chairman, Department of General Marine Microbiology, University of Göteborg (Sweden)
- 1981-1982 Research Fellow, University of Göteborg (Sweden)
- 1983-1986 Researcher, Swedish Natural Science Research Council
Research Contribution
At University of Goteborg, I established leading research programs in the areas of bacterial starvation and stress responses, microorganisms and interfaces, and marine biofouling. Strong European wide involvements included the biology of stasis in bacteria and risk assessment of deliberate release and the establishment of biological containment of genetically modified microorganisms.
At UNSW I have established an internationally recognised centre, CMB, which conducts basic and applied science in the areas of bacterial biofilms, cell-cell signalling, chemically mediated interactions between marine bacteria and sessile eukaryotes, novel marine bioactives, microbial environmental genomics, functional metagenomics, and bioremediation. A comprehensive set of patent families was licensed from the University to the biotechnology start up Biosignal Pty Ltd. The Environmental Microbiology Initiative, established in collaboration with Rick Cavicchioli and Brett Neilan will aid in building excellence in environmental genomics applied to research themes in environmental health and sustainability, water quality and water reuse, microbial processes and climate change, biodiversity and bioprospecting.
