Career Profile - Carl Ruppin

Age: 25

Title of your Honours thesis?
Vitamin B12-dependant growth response in Sphingomonas alaskensis RB2256

Your best memory of UNSW?
The amount of time available to spend with friends: around classes, during classes and away from uni.
Current job description?
Solicitor

Your strengths?
I have an innate ability & interest in learning new things. This has cultivated my ability to talk confidently to strangers, workmates, groups, etc.

Your weaknesses?

Conversely, I am too easily distracted. I find that I am not entranced by anything to stick with it for the long-haul.

Worst part of the job?

Best part of the job?
The fact that I am working for a large firm means that there are a reasonable variety of tasks and I have the chance to move around and try different things. I also like the perks and facilities that go along with working for a large organisation.

Strangest thing you've ever had to do?
Not that strange, really, but always fun - are the 'undercover' shopping expeditions that I get to do to gather evidence on our clients' competitors' products when they're the subject of litigation. I spend a day in plain clothes, shopping with someone else's money and then appear back in court to testify about the lies that the sales-people have told me about their products.

Career ethic?
Try different things. Remember (usually) it's just a job, so focus on getting something out of it rather than just doing the work for work's sake. Work hard, succeed at what you're doing and move on if it's both boring and going nowhere.

Job you most covet?
No idea (haven't seen them all yet). Successful author, contract programmer or 'consultant' at large would be nice?. Anything where I can set my own hours and work from wherever I feel like sounds nice at this point.

Where will you be in 10-15 years time?
