Degree Changing FAQs
Yes. In all our science degrees you study foundation courses in the first year enabling you to specialise in second and third years. So, if you'd like to transfer to another science degree, you'll have studied the right courses to continue into Year 2 of a different one. Please remember, all applications to transfer between degrees, and for advanced standing, are assessed on academic merit.
It is easiest to transfer into the Science Degree Program (Program 3970) from the professional degrees and from the Advanced, Medical and Environmental Science Degree Programs. Transfers in the other direction can be made provided that you fulfil the entry requirements of the specific program.
To transfer into Science Program 3970, you will need to lodge a letter of request at the Student Science Centre. Be sure to include your name, student number, your current academic program, a request to transfer into program 3970 and the major and minor you wish to have. You should also attach a copy of your academic transcript to the back. SSO are also helpful for advising you on the possibility of your intended degree change and any requirements in order to complete your degree.
Australian students need to submit a UAC application which are located in UAC guides, available in most newsagents and the University Bookshop.
International Students need to use a direct University application which are available from UNSW International in the Red Centre on campus.
Provisional deadlines for submitting an application are September of the preceding year of intended transfer. However, applications may be received right up until January preceding the start of the academic year, although a late fee may apply.
To pick up an Arts degree, you will need to lodge a letter of request at the Student Science Centre. Be sure to include your name, student number, your current academic program, a request to transfer into the appropriate program and the majors/ study plans you wish to have in both your Science and Arts programs. You should also attach a copy of your academic transcript to the back. SSO are also helpful for advising you on the possibility of your intended degree change and any requirements in order to complete your degree.
For applications to change between Advanced Science programs, students must apply in writing to the Science Student Centre before the start of session. Applications are assessed on academic performance and approval is subject to places being available in the nominated program. Transfer should not be considered automatic. Please contact the Science Student Centre for more details.
