PhD Scholarship
Biocatalysis for sustainable development
$A 25,000 pa,2006-2008

This scholarship is available for a candidate to pursue a PhD in microbiology/ biotechnology in collaboration with the international industry partner BASF.

Biocatalysis plays an increasing role for the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals on an industrial scale because of the low energy requirement and decreased waste generation compared to chemical processes. However, toxicity of substrates and products to microbial cells is a major challenge for the innovation of new biocatalytical processes. In previous studies, microbial cells organized in surface associated biofilms had higher resistance to antimicrobial substances than single cells: the project will investigate and harness this excellent property of biofilms.

The project provides excellent training for candidates interested in academic or industrial career paths. Background in microbiology is essential and further experience in biotechnology is desirable.

We will provide a scholarship of $A 25,000 per year tax-free for 3 years. Alternatively, should you secure an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), we will supplement this with up to an extra $A 7,000. Allowances in addition to the scholarship include laboratory expenses, personal education, and assistance for the cost of local and overseas conference travel and thesis production. International students are responsible for covering international student fees:http://my.unsw.edu.au/student/fees/FeePolicyInternational.html
