BABS Researchers Awarded a High Number of Government Grants National Health and Medical Research Council Grants Dr Andrew Brown was awarded a grant for his project entitiled: Role of an Endogenously Synthesised Sterol in Regulating Cholesterol Removal from the Macrophage. Funding Levels: 2005: $90,750 2006: $90,750 2007: $90,750 Professor Staffan Kjelleberg along with Professor A Cripps, Professor M Willcox, Dr N Kumar,Dr S Rice, Dr E Hume received funding for their project on the Development of Novel Antimicrobial Agents. Funding Levels: 2005: $154,250 2006: $154,250 2007: $154,250 Professor Ian Dawes and Dr R. Lin, with their collegues at the Baker Heart Research Institute, Associate Professor E. Woodcock and Dr Assam El-Osta were awarded a grant for their project entitled: A new way to reduce infarction during heart attack. Funding Levels: 3 years - total budget $349,500 Australian Research Council Discovery Grants Dr Andrew Brown and Dr MA Lyons were funded for their project entitled:"Defining the Regulatory Pool of Cholesterol in the Mammalian Cell. Funding Levels: 2005: $80,000 2006: $70,000 2007: $70,000 Associate Professor Rick Cavicchioli along with Dr MJ Raftery, and Dr FJ Joux were awarded a grant for their project on The Molecular Basis of Oligotrophy: an integrated genomic and functional proteomic study of the model marine oligotroph, Sphingopyxis alaskensis Funding Levels: 2005: $100,000 2006: $70,000 2007: $70,000 Professor Ian Dawesreceived funding for his project entitled: Cellular Gene Regulation Networks Funding Levels: 2005:$115,000 2006: $115,000 2007: $115,000 2008: $115,000 2009: $115,000 Dr Mark Tanaka and Dr AR Francis were awarded a grant for their project on Evolutionary models and bioinformatic analyses of genetic variation in pathogens Funding Levels: 2005: $90,000 2006: $85,000 2007: $90,000 Associate Professor Brett Neilan along with Professor TD Waite, Dr MJ Fumas, Dr MA Burford and Mr AL Rose received funding for their project entitled: Mechanisms of Iron Acquisition by the Cyanobacterium Trichodesmium in coastal waters. Funding Levels: 2005: $142,000 2006: $130,000 2007: $130,000 In addition, Associate Professor Brett Neilan received a grant in conjunction with Dr F. Pomati for their project on Sodium homeostasis and the molecular basis for neurotoxin production by bacteria and algae. Funding Levels: 2005: $190,000: 2006: $190,000: 2007: $190,000: 2008: $190,000: 2009: $190,000 Included in this grant was a Australian Professorial Fellowship for Brett Neilan - One of only 23 awarded nationally! Australian Research Council Linkage Projects Professor Ian Dawes,Adjunct Professor PJ Rogers, and Dr V Higgins received a grant for their project on Application of functional genomics to study early fermentation parameters.
