Postgraduates in BABS recognised in Australia and abroad

BABS postgraduates receive grants and scholarships in 2004
Scott Melville received a grant from the Batten Disease and Research Association, an organization that supports families of children affected by this fatal neurological disorder. It is the second year in a row that Scott has received the grant for his research on Border collies affected by this disease. Last year there were only 10 other grant recipients and Scott was the only one that was at a postgraduate rather than postdoctoral level.

Linda Palmisano was one of three students to win a Promoted Speaker Award ($150 + plaque) at the prestigious the Biology of Post-transcriptional Gene Regulation conference in Andover, New Hamshire. Linda also attended the 2004 Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting in Seattle, Washington on a travel award and won an honorable mention for her poster presentation.

Travel Awards and Scholarships take students around the globe

Eva Chan was the recipient of two travel scholarships from the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute. One was to attend a Mathematical and Computational Biology held at the University of Queensland in July and the other to attend the 4th National Microarray Conference to be held Sept/Oct in Freemantle, WA.

Anthony Beckhouse received a scholarship to attend University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology for 3 months. The award was part of a Wellcome Trust Grant given to Dr Chris Grant.

Caroline Choi and Adam Ritchie were 2 out of 100 students worldwide to receive travel awards to attend the 12th Annual Congress for Immunology in Montreal in July.

Note: 10 of these grants went to Australians, proving that the nation holds its own in more than just sport!
