Application of flow cytometry and cell sorting to microbiology

This project aims to build on technologies available within the “single-cell analysis facility” at UNSW. This project will utilise the latest fluorescence technologies to evaluate the capabilities of flow cytometry for accurate analysis of both bacteria and parasites such as Cryptosporidium.

This will include the application of fluorescence in situ hybridisation for the detection of specific species including those from unique Bacterial Divisions.

Both projects offered by Belinda Ferrari will combine the use of fluorescence, epi-fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry for the isolation and subsequent characterisation of novel species of bacteria from the environment.
