Traditional Herbal Medicines for Quorum Sensing Inhibition

Herbal medicines have been used extensively to combat bacterial infections, and their biocidal or biostatic activities have been described. Little is known, however, about whether their effectiveness is also due to quorum sensing inhibition. Quorum sensing inhibitors are proposed as alternative therapeutics to overcome the problem of increasing antibiotic resistance of bacteria in infectious diseases.

This project will involve the screening of herbal extracts in biofilm assays. Antibiotic activities as well as quorum sensing inhibition will be determined. The results will be analysed in relation to the traditional use of the herbs.
