UnikZymes have been developed by our group using technology that directly modifies enzymes. This contrasts with directed evolution and other recombinant DNA techniques that are used to modify genes. We have developed upwards of 100 modifications which can be applied to native, recombinant, wild-type or mutant enzymes. |
The techniques protect enzymes or alter particular properties by modifying a range of surface amino-groups or carboxyl-groups or methylene groups in the enzymes. We can achieve increases or decreases in thermostability, increases or decreases in temperature optimum, improvements in pH stability, and potentially modify the substrate specificity of an enzyme. Seven patents (three platform and four specific) are at the international stage of review (PCT) covering enzymes such as cellulase, α-amylase, glucoamylase, xylanase, lipase and alkaline phosphatase. These commercial activities are funded and coordinated through Unisearch Ltd, which is a University owned technology development company. Examples of UnikZymes and further description of the technology, including investment opportunities, can be found at the Unisearch web site (http://www.unisearch.com.au/index.asp).
