The increasing focus on quantitative techniques in biology and medicine has led to a demand for interaction between researchers in the traditional medical and life science area, and those in mathematics, statistics, physics and engineering. Such interactions are now developing at the University of New South Wales through the activities of the Mathematical Biology CIG. Activities in 2004 included a symposium at which the diversity of UNSW Mathematical Biology research was highlighted. In November 2004, the CIG held a highly successful workshop over five days, which explored the following three issues:

• How much selection can a population sustain?
• Dynamical analysis of a size-class plankton model.
• A classification problem in gene expression microarray experiments.
