Biocatalysis for Sustainable Development
Our research area is the biotransformation of chemicals or waste material into value added products. We draw on the biodiversity of enzymes and microbes, which are efficient catalysts optimized in the process of evolution. Environmental and economical benefits in comparison to conventional chemical catalysis are energy efficiency (operation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure) and specificity (low by-product levels). We focus on the discovery of enzymes and microbes and on bioprocess development - in particular organic/aqueous two-phase biocatalysis, microbial biofilm reactors and fermentation optimization. Underpinned by curiosity driven research, our ultimate goal is to contribute to the sustainable development of our industries.
