Research Description:

My research encompasses both molecular virology and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria.

My three main areas of research include:

1) The replication and evolution of viruses, in particular hepatitis C virus and norovirus

2) Detection and molecular epidemiology of human enteric viruses

3) Antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria

Profile:

My research focuses primarily on molecular microbiology, with particular interests focussing on norovirus, hepatitis C virus, and antibiotic resistance.  I was appointed Associate professor in Molecular Biology and Microbiology within the and Biomolecular Sciences, UNSW at the beginning of 2008.  I am course coordinator for the third year course Viruses and Disease (MICR3061) and I lecture to medical students and science students on four other courses.   At the Prince of Wales Hospital I hold the position of Honorary Consultant Virologist.

I have published 48 original papers and attracted over $4 million in grant funding since 2002.  My research group currently comprises one postdoctoral scientist (Dr Rowena Bull), one research assistant, five PhD students, and one honours student. Eighteen Hons students have completed under my supervision since 1997.

Following a B.Sc (Hons) in Biotechnology at King's College London, I completed a PhD in 1996 at University College, London in molecular biology and protein biochemistry.  The PhD was funded by a Medical Research Council (MRC-UK) scholarship.  In 1996 I  started a period of post-doctoral research at Macquarie University, Sydney as a recipient of a Royal Society Fellowship.  The project involved research into the spread of antibiotic resistance genes by novel DNA elements, termed integrons, an area of molecular microbiology I am still active in.

Recently I have been appointed to the Executive of Australian Centre for Hepatitis Virology (ACHV) as Vice President.  The virology lab on Level 2 (Rm262) is a core laboratory of the ACHV and a Tier 1 laboratory of the  Australian Centre for HIV and Heaptitis virology (ACH2).  I was on the organising committee for the 11th International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease and was part of the organising team for the 13th International Symposium on Hepatitis C and Related Viruses.
