BABS Environmental Biologist Dr Brendan Burns Participant in Ocean Sampling Day

BABS Senior Lecturer Dr Brendan Burns was a participant in global Ocean Sampling Day, a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world’s oceans which took place for the first time on the 2014 summer solstice. The aim of the project is for the cumulative samples – related in time, space and environmental parameters – to provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and contribute to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies.

Brendan participated in the Australian winter solstice OSD, collecting samples from Shark Bay in Western Australia, where he regularly has field trips as part of his research into the amazing stromatolites located there.

Brendan's photo on the day was featured as the cover for the facebook page of Micro B3's facebook page.
