This part-time fully on-line four-course program is designed to meet the educational needs of those research and development scientists and managers involved in the commercialisation of biotechnology-based opportunities. Students take one course per term in Terms 1 and 2. It is the only such program offered by an Australian university.
The program aims to provide students with key capabilities in understanding the translation process required for successful entrepreneurship and development of biotechnology innovations, accessing global networks, and navigating unique regional market challenges. These skills are the drivers of the biotechnology sector’s competitiveness and growth.
Through completion of the program, graduates will enhance their understanding of the business imperatives that impact innovation translation/commercialisation, and the need to be cross-functional and adapt to changing career opportunities.
The content of the program was developed with extensive industry consultation and is taught in part by industry experts in collaboration with UNSW biotechnology academia.
With less than 20 students per group, classes are small and taught by both industry-experienced academics and industry experts and leaders. All four courses are delivered in a flexible asynchronous yet interactive manner, which allows for classes to comprise students from across Australasia, Asia and beyond.
The skills and knowledge delivered in the Commercial Biotechnology program can be practically applied to careers in R&D or new product management, business development management, biotechnology investment analysis, venture capital, business strategy, commercialisation consulting, government funding agencies and government policy.
